Safina Party Condemns the Suppression of Opposition and the Assault on Democracy in Tanzania

The Safina Party strongly condemns the growing repression and the deliberate assault on
democracy in Tanzania under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, characterized by the
systematic silencing of citizens through intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and violence.
The continued detention of opposition leaders, including members of CHADEMA and
ACT-Wazalendo, some reportedly facing deteriorating health while in custody, represents a
grave abuse of power and a blatant violation of democratic values.
Tanzania today stands as a painful reminder of what happens when leaders abandon
democratic principles and rule through coercion. Internet shutdowns, curfews, and the use
of security forces against citizens have no place in a society that claims to respect the rule of
law and human rights.
Equally troubling is that, decades after independence, parts of our region remain trapped
under leaders who cling to outdated ideologies of control, relics of colonial rule, that treat
citizens as subjects rather than participants.
As a party that emerged from Kenya’s own struggle for multiparty democracy, Safina stands
firmly with the people of Tanzania. Our history reminds us that freedom is never given, it is
demanded, and it is defended.
We therefore call upon President Samia Suluhu Hassan to end the repression, release all
detained opposition leaders, and uphold the people’s right to freely and fairly choose their
leaders.
